Lifting with a U-bolt?
A U-bolt through a beam is a tempting lifting point — it's already there, it's strong, and it's cheap. Whether it is safe depends on four things: the load that actually reaches each leg once the dynamic and skew factors are on it, the grade and size of the bar, what the sling bears on at the crown, and what the beam does under the nut. This check does the arithmetic for the first three and tells you what an engineer has to look at for the fourth.

Why the crown decides it
The two legs of an M30 U-bolt in class 4.6 will hold far more than a 6-tonne beam needs. The bend will not — if a hook sits on it. Treated as a thin ring under a point load (Roark, Formulas for Stress and Strain, ring with two opposite concentrated loads), the bending moment at the crown is about 0.318 × P × R. For 48 kN at the crown of a bar with a 130 mm centreline radius, that is a bending stress near 750 MPa on a bar whose yield is 240 — it opens up. A saddle or a pin that fills the inside radius spreads that load over the bend as bearing, and the leg tension governs again. That is why the tool insists on one, and why a rated lifting point is shaped the way it is.
What the beam, pipe or slab has to do
Beam or channel. The nut bears on the flange: the flange bends locally, the hole bears on the bar, and the load has to get from the flange into the web. A plate washer spreads the nut load; where the U-bolt passes through both flanges, as on the drawing that prompted this page, both flanges share it. That check is the engineer's, to AISC or EN 1993-1-8, and it is usually what limits a light section.
Pipe. A U-bolt around a pipe holds by friction. It is a clamp, not a lifting point: the pipe slides through it under load. Lift pipe on slings, hooks or a vacuum lifter, and use the U-bolt to hold it on the rack afterwards.
Precast slab. A U-bolt cast into concrete is an anchor, and its capacity is the concrete's, not the steel's — cone breakout, edge distance, embedment, to ACI 318 Chapter 17. Proprietary lifting anchors come with a tested WLL table for exactly this reason. We can make a cast-in loop to a drawing; we cannot rate it, and the tool will not try.
