Match the nut class to the bolt

A property class 8 nut on a 10.9 bolt will strip before the bolt reaches its design load. The nut must be at least equal to the bolt.

Class 8 with 8.8 · class 10 with 10.9 · class 12 with 12.9. If in doubt, ask before ordering rather than after.

M10 and M12 — two spanner sizes exist

Same as the bolts: DIN 934 originally specified 17 mm and 19 mm across flats at M10 and M12. ISO 4032 specifies 16 mm and 18 mm.

Nut and bolt must match, or the fitter needs two spanners for one joint.

Nut class is marked on a face or the chamfer. A nut is designed to strip before the bolt breaks only when correctly paired — under-matching removes that safety behaviour.

Hot-dip galvanized nuts

A galvanized nut is tapped oversize after coating to clear the zinc on the bolt thread. Galvanized nuts and bolts should be ordered together and used as a pair.

Mixing a galvanized nut with a plain bolt gives a loose fit and unreliable clamp load.

Testing

Dimensional and thread inspection is carried out in our own plant on calibrated instruments. Tensile, hardness and chemical testing is carried out by independent UAE-accredited laboratories.
