ASTM F436 hardened washer

Through-hardened flat washer for high-strength structural bolting. Spreads the clamp load and prevents the bolt head or nut biting into the steel. Not interchangeable with a plain washer.

A plain washer is not a substitute

DIN 125A and ISO 7089 washers are 140 or 200 HV — roughly 20 to 30 HRC. Under an A325 or A490 bolt they dish, and the clamp load is lost as the washer deforms.

Where the drawing calls for F436, supply F436. The hardness is the point of the part, not the diameter.

Where a washer is required

Under the turned element in every A490 connection, and in A325 connections with slotted or oversize holes. Bevelled washers where the bearing face slopes more than 1 in 20, as on an American Standard beam flange.

Hardness for F436M is the same as F436: 38 – 45 HRC.

Where a European drawing calls for DIN 6916 and only F436 is available, or the reverse, ask before substituting. They are close but not identical.

Anchor bolts, studs and plate washers are manufactured at our own plant. This item is not.
