Grade A and Grade B are not the sameGrade A — 60 ksi tensile minimum, no maximum. General purpose. Grade B — 60 to 100 ksi, with a maximum as well as a minimum. Specified for flanged joints in cast iron pipe, where an over-strong bolt can crack the flange before it yields. If the drawing says Grade B, Grade A is not a substitute even though it meets the minimum. Grade C is withdrawnA307 Grade C was withdrawn and replaced by ASTM F1554 Grade 36 for anchor bolts. Drawings calling for A307 Grade C anchor bolts should be read as F1554 Grade 36. Anchor bolts to F1554 are manufactured at our own plant. Not for slip-critical connectionsA307 is not a high-strength structural bolt and cannot be pretensioned. For slip-critical or pretensioned connections use A325 or A490 to ASTM F3125. GradesASTM A307
Grade A is marked 307A on the head, Grade B is marked 307B. Unmarked bolts should not be accepted where the grade matters. Metric equivalentapproximate
